Hazy mornings have been mostly the norm ever since the temperature started warming up a couple of months ago. This has meant the colors in the sky have been somewhat less vibrant in general, but it has also added a certain degree of tranquility to the early mornings. Somehow, hazy mornings seem quieter. This bench seems like a good place to be still and take it all in.

Sunday, July 5, 2015 (Day 186)
A glowing orange sun begins to rise amidst a slowly dissipating cloud cover. Getting up before 5am just about every morning for the past month or so has been increasingly tough for me, but getting up earlier in general has been great. As the sun continues to slowly rise a bit later and later each day, I’m hoping to find an ideal wake up time that will work best for me through the rest of this project and beyond.
Saturday, July 4, 2015 (Day 185)
Independence. I remember watching a documentary that showed colonial American soldiers firing canons from Hoboken’s cliffs into a Hudson River completely filled with British naval warships. That was the scene I thought about as I stood looking down at the river and the city skyline from Elysian Park this morning. The sky was completely overcast blue at sunrise, with a light drizzle. I decided this flag in the park with the spotlight shining on it would make the perfect subject for today’s photo.

Finding peace. As I walked out along the waterfront this morning, my eyes were repeatedly drawn to this one spot at the end of these piers, where the hazy sky glowed orange, and the color was silently reflected in the water below. I took out my longer zoom lens and used it to isolate the scene. I don’t know what it was about that sight that drew me to it. There was just something peaceful about it. Maybe sometimes it helps to focus on one thing and tune everything else out.
