It must be cruise season in NYC, because this is the third cruise ship I’ve seen this week.

When I arrived at this location, there was a tugboat pushing a barge, which I thought would work nicely with the working docks you see in the foreground. After all, Hoboken’s waterfront used to be full of docks where ships would get built or repaired. But I was in too much of a hurry and my photos didn’t come out very good.

A few moments later, I was excited to see the nose of a cruise ship approaching, being escorted by a pair of tugboats. Even better. This time I was ready. And the horizon was aglow in orange and peach.

It’s nice to get an unexpected treat–especially for two days in a row.

There was a lot going on in the sky this morning, and it was difficult to capture it all in one frame without zooming out too far.

As I explained yesterday, the most brilliant colors were once again seen at the far north end of the Hudson. But there was also a break in the clouds near the horizon above the city, while far overhead the edges of the clouds gowed in a faint pink.

I tried several compositions from multiple locations, but most of the shots just still seemed empty, like they were missing a subject or foreground element.

Just then, I turned around and saw a giant cruise ship approaching, which was unexpected on a Friday. I knew this would be my chance. I framed a shot and waited for the cruise ship to arrive, and that was it.

Thursday, April 23, 2015 (Day 113)

There has been noticeably more haze in the sky ever since the season changed several weeks ago. This has meant that even on clear mornings the sky gets a little more colorful than it did in winter, since the haze diffuses the light more gently and more evenly.

It seems like this affect also causes the most brilliant colors to be seen looking towards the far north or far south ends of the Hudson river. This has created a bit of a challenge for me because I always want to get the exact location of where the sun is rising within the frame of my photographs, so I have to use a very wide angle to capture not only the sunrise location but also the brilliant colors upriver or downriver on a morning like today. Most of my shots are wide angle anyway, but I have to be sure to stay creative when shooting the similar scenes in the same direction.

For today’s shoot, i tried a few different exposure lengths, and I ended up liking this relatively short exposure because it gave a nice texture to the water and the gentle waves against the rocks.

Wednesday, April 22, 2015 (Day 112)

The only clouds in the sky this morning were hanging low over the city, so I decided to frame the scene with the interior of this gazebo. As the sun came up, it created a fiery orange glow from beneath the clouds.

I’ve taken a few photos of the various gazebos around town, but I haven’t yet taken one from inside a gazebo.

Sitting there watching the sunrise was nice and relaxing, as gazebos usually are for some reason. It was a good vantage point to really take in the scene around me.

Tuesday, April 21, 2015 (Day 111)

I wasn’t very exited to go out this morning, because it was completely overcast and drizzling when I woke up. I also knew there had been a thunderstorm overnight, so the thought of walking around outside near the wide open waterfront with what is essentially a big metal lightning rod didn’t sound like the best idea either.

I figured I would just quickly take a few pictures and go back home. The clouds looked at least somewhat interesting early on, but the rain was annoying. I noticed a clearing in the clouds making its way toward the city, so I decided to tough it out and wait to see what it was going to look like.

After a few minutes, the drizzle came to a halt, and that’s when all of a sudden the sun made its presence known, radiating a bright orange glow through the haze.

I’m glad I stayed out for those extra few minutes. Sometimes success is waiting just a little further up ahead.
