At the skate park today. This park is in a great location, right on the waterfront. It’s an often overlooked part of town, except by those who use it. Hundreds of joggers run past it every day, though many regard it as an eyesore, so I was hoping to show it in a new light. I think the ramps and the fence add some interesting elements to this morning’s sunrise.
One day I was jogging past when I saw an old friend from grad school hitting the ramps on his skateboard. I was surprised. This guy was an ex-Marine and an MBA graduate. I stopped to say hello, and mentioned that I didn’t know he was into skateboarding. He smiled and said, “This is how I get MY exercise.” The encounter reminded me not to stereotype…you never know who might not fit the mold you create in your mind. And sometimes those who defy the stereotypes can be some of the most interesting and impactful people.
