Do Extraordinary Things

I was out a little earlier than usual this morning, and wanted to use that extra time to walk a little further than I normally do.

There were some great clouds and I was hoping some color would break through in a little while. At the time, it was still blue hour and the clouds already looked great, so I took a few photos just in case the colors never happened later on.

When I see an interesting scene early on, even if it is not quite the location where I am headed, I always stop and take a few photos of it before moving along. I call these photos “insurance photos” because I can fall back on them if the morning doesn’t develop the way I expected it to.

The point is, if you see a great photo, take it. If you see an opportunity, take it. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect because more often than not, the perfect time you are expecting never comes. You’re already in the perfect moment. The perfect moment is now.

Thursday, September 10, 2015 (Day 253)

It was a dramatic scene at the waterfront this morning just as it was starting to rain. The soft blue light of dawn was sharply contrasted by a single small opening in the clouds that let through some bright orange light.

I got out there just as the intensity of the colors was starting to heighten, and as the rain started coming down I quickly set up and grabbed a few pictures.

The rain quickly became too much to bear and I retreated under a tree to wait for it to pass. It was gone within minutes, but so were the colors and drama of the scene, as everything had turned a dreary light gray.

But my work was already done. I walked home, happy that timing was on my side today.

Change happens fast. You need to act quickly.

The early morning clouds were rushing past. There was a low layer of dark gray clouds which partially shrouded a more colorful layer of clouds high above.

Near the center of this frame, behind the dark clouds, was a giant pink cloud that was brightly illuminated. I tried to photograph it, but I was just a few moments too late. It was gone forever as the dark cloud cover quickly grew heavier and enveloped most of the sky.

Luckily, there was still some color left when I took this picture, and all the bright colors were gone just a few minutes later.

I lamented my missed opportunity for a brief moment, but happily accepted it, knowing what I had already accomplished today.

Tuesday, August 25, 2015 (Day 237)

It was a strange morning. It was still pretty dark until around 6am, much later than usual, mainly due to these clouds. The light wasn’t that great until around 6:30, which has been becoming the norm these past couple of weeks.

I may use this to my advantage and sleep in a few mornings until about 6:00 to get caught up on a little sleep. Yesterday I mentioned how sometimes I wake up earlier than needed anyway, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

But at the other end, I still need to get to bed earlier. While this project has helped me solve my prior issues of frequently going to bed around midnight or 1am, I still sometimes stay up as late as 10:30 or 11pm on a weeknight, and that is still a little too late considering my early wake up times. This is something I’ll be working on over the next few weeks.

This morning reminded me how small we really are in the grand scheme of things. Here we have one of the largest cities in the world–one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments–and it was completely dwarfed by what was going on overhead.
