Independence. I remember watching a documentary that showed colonial American soldiers firing canons from Hoboken’s cliffs into a Hudson River completely filled with British naval warships. That was the scene I thought about as I stood looking down at the river and the city skyline from Elysian Park this morning. The sky was completely overcast blue at sunrise, with a light drizzle. I decided this flag in the park with the spotlight shining on it would make the perfect subject for today’s photo.

Finding peace. As I walked out along the waterfront this morning, my eyes were repeatedly drawn to this one spot at the end of these piers, where the hazy sky glowed orange, and the color was silently reflected in the water below. I took out my longer zoom lens and used it to isolate the scene. I don’t know what it was about that sight that drew me to it. There was just something peaceful about it. Maybe sometimes it helps to focus on one thing and tune everything else out.

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 (Day 182)
This morning was an overcast blue haze. Within minutes of waking up, I saw two big lightning bolts outside, so I decided to play it safe and grab a quick blurry photo with my iphone from the window rather than try my luck with the lightning outside. As you can see from this photo, I was still pretty groggy this morning from my trip. But at least now I’m all caught up with my photos. If all goes well tomorrow, I may grab my camera equipment and head outside.
Tuesday, June 30, 2015 (Day 181)
My first morning back in Hoboken to watch the sunrise over NYC. It was great to see the city and the bright orange color in the sky. It always feels good to see this view. Unfortunately for me, though, I’m back to the earlier sunrises of the northeast which means I have to wake up earlier again (around 4:45) in order to get outside with time to spare. This was not an easy task upon returning home, especially when still needing to catch up on some sleep. For this photo, I just went over to the waterfront and did a quick pano with my phone before going back to get a little more rest.
