A humid and hazy sunrise at the beach this morning. This giant cloud formation turned pink as the sun was coming up. I took a series of shots to try to get the reflection in the shallow water as the waves receded, and this one came out the best.

Today I’d like to speak about creating something from nothing. Overcast mornings are always a challenge for me because they all look fairly similar, and most people find them less appealing than days when there are bright colors in the sky. So, I always try to create a scene that looks a bit more interesting, such as including something in the foreground or framing the shot as you see here. In essence, I feel like I am creating something out of nothing. But we really never start with “nothing”. As Steve Jobs once said, “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something.”

This morning was a perfect example of how much the sunrise is a zen experience, and I felt today it was best captured with this short video.IMG_5450
I’ve been trying to change things up a bit lately. It can be easy to fall into a creative rut posting photos of similar scenes every day taken with the same camera and same lens and same camera settings almost 200 times. Luckily, nature helps out a bit by changing the look of the scene dramatically each day, but a few weeks ago I started feeling like I was falling into that rut, and that feeling served as a reminder to always be looking for new ways to experience the sunrise each morning.
Thursday, July 16, 2015 (Day 197)
There were some nice colors near the horizon this morning, but this big cloud formation was the main attraction. The only way to take it all in was with a panoramic. This one was composed of three images stitched together. Also, it was the chilliest morning in a while…I wore jeans and a long sleeve t shirt but when I got out there I wished I hadn’t left my hoodie at home.
