I’ve been walking past these flowers almost every day, waiting for the right time to photograph them. There was a gorgeous clear sky this morning, but rather than take another photo of the blank city skyline, I thought this would be the time to create a more interesting scene in the foreground.

Saturday mornings are usually very calm. I guess all the morning runners take the day off, because there are barely any runners on Saturday mornings. Usually there are just some dog walkers, and a few people sitting down somewhere watching the sunrise. So I was hoping to capture that calmness with today’s photo.

There are two sides to everything. Yin and yang. One cannot exist without the other. One is not necessarily good while the other is not necessarily bad. Everything just is what it is. Everything is in balance. Learn to accept the balance objectively without labeling, without judgement, and without despair. Everything is exactly the way it needs to be.

What a start to the day. I’ve been photographing the sunrise for 217 days now and today was one of my favorites.

People often ask me about my future plans and where I am going with this project. In short, while I am going to continue photographing the sunrise every day for a while and continue looking for ways to gain exposure for my work, I will also be looking for ways to spread my message and help to inspire people to do extraordinary things in their lives. Essentially, I want to be the Gary Vaynerchuk (@garyvee) of sunrise photography. Gary went from working in his parents’ liquor store, to posting homemade videos of himself tasting wine, to parlaying that into becoming a world-renowned social media expert, entrepreneur, speaker, author, and inspiration for millions of people. While his vehicle to get there was wine, mine will be sunrise photography.

Thunder and lightning woke me up this morning at 4:14am. I couldn’t go back to sleep, or maybe I didn’t want to, so got up and started to think about the possibility of doing a photo from my window to avoid going out in the lightning. But an hour later the lightning was long gone and the storm had left behind some dramatic clouds, so I headed down to the waterfront.

I’m glad I did, because it was quite a scene.
