A giant emerges.
Number 5 on my countdown of 7 favorite places to watch the sunrise in Hoboken is Shipyard Marina. There is something relaxing and soothing about a marina, and our hometown marina sits in a perfect spot right on the waterfront. The are no boats in the marina this time of year, but that didn’t prevent me from getting one of my favorite boat-related photographs of the year.
Normally the city skyline serves as a backdrop for this scene, but not this morning. A thick fog created a dramatic effect here at the marina. I took a series of shots but kept hearing a strong foghorn out somewhere in the distance. It would sound every couple of minutes, but I couldn’t tell if it was getting any closer. Then it started to get louder. It was getting closer.
At first I could see only the pointed bow of this cruise ship through the fog as it inched towards me. This was where my experience paid off. I knew the exact settings I would need in order to photograph the cruise ship in this scenario, and quickly set my camera and started shooting. It couldn’t have been a more perfect moment. When experience meets opportunity, amazing things can happen.
