What does it mean to #capturethesunrise ? It’s

What does it mean to #capturethesunrise ? It’s actually not about photography or even about the sunrise. It’s about finding your unique interests and using them to do something extraordinary. Because when you do that, it unlocks doors you never even knew existed.

For me, rising before dawn every day and photographing the sunrise was the gateway to other things I could have never anticipated.

“Follow your passion” is bad advice. Sure, i

“Follow your passion” is bad advice.

Sure, it works out for some, and those people will swear by it. But for too many others, it leads them down a path towards a dead end. They are left feeling bewildered, discouraged, and futile.

That’s because something is missing from the equation. Passion alone is not enough.

What’s missing is context. Context is how you connect what is happening internally (passion) with what is happening externally (market opportunity). Pursue passion without context, and you drastically increase your risk of failure.

Context requires you to be honest with yourself about what you’re actually good at, and how that relates to what people actually want or need.

But before you go ahead and assume your passion is the greatest gift everyone has ever seen, you may want to stop yourself and try to see the forest through the trees.

A good place to start is by thinking about what people ask you for help or advice about, or significant achievements you’ve made. Think about what you’ve actually done, and what you’re actually doing right now (whether you like it or not). If you were to ask the people around you what they see as your unique talents and abilities, what would they say?

You will start to see patterns emerge, and you will start to connect the dots.

And when the right dots get connected, you will understand what you are meant to do, your context will hit you like a bolt of lightning, and ironically, you will find passion.

The world around you is trying to tell you something. If you tune in, and listen, you just might hear it.

“I feel like I want to do SOMETHING, but I just don’t know what that SOMETHING is.”

That’s one of the more common things people have said to me over the years when they’ve come to me for coaching or advice.

People might want more fulfilling work, more quality time with their family, better relationships, or a chance to pursue their passions, among other things…but often don’t quite know how to get there.

The long and winding road. It’s been a while sin

The long and winding road. It’s been a while since my sunrise photography project several years ago. Since then, a lot has happened.

Perhaps the biggest development in my life has been the way I have taken the experience and lessons learned from CaptureTheSunrise and have been applying them to help other people achieve extraordinary things.

It’s been a long and winding road, but I’ve finally figured out my life’s purpose and now I help others do the same. To date, I have coached over 100 people and have seen some incredible results. Few things have been more gratifying than seeing these changes in peoples’ lives.

Now, I’m coming back to this platform, where the inspiration first started, and I’m excited to share the next chapter in this story. My goal is to continue inspiring people in any way I can.

I’m still rising before dawn every day, but these days I’ve traded my camera for running shoes. Rain or shine, my mornings start with a pre-dawn outdoor workout or run.

This photo was taken in October on a 10k run in Texas hill country. I was away at a weekend Summit with men who are part of one of the groups that I coach. This particular program is focused on goal setting, productivity, mindset, health, and up-leveling every aspect of your life in a balanced and fulfilling way.

I completed my first marathon a few weeks later.

Golden hour in the Blue Ridge. This sunrise was from a few weeks ago, off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, NC. The mountains were near peak foliage and shades of yellow and orange dominated the landscape. The sky was relatively hazy, and as the sun rose above the ridge of the mountains, it was mostly suppressed by the haze. But as it continued to rise, it burned through the haze and cast a yellow glow on everything, which accentuated the already amazing colors of the scene. When met with your own adversity, your own haze, continue forward. Continue to rise. Beginning. This morning's sunrise marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life, as it is officially my first sunrise as a resident of North Carolina. It's been an exhausting past few days moving from NJ, but last night I finally got my first good night's sleep in a while. I woke up early and went over to Loch Lomond, a small lake in our neighborhood. Upon arriving I realized I didn't have my camera in the car as I thought I did, so I did a panoramic with my iPhone instead. Anticipation. Over the past few days I had been an

Anticipation. Over the past few days I had been anticipating this morning of our trip because it appeared to have the most potential of having an intensely colorful sunrise based on the weather predictions. And so this morning I watched as the sun slowly made its presence known and attempted to pierce through the clouds. The anticipation continued to build. Although there were plenty of breaks in the clouds, the cloud cover and haze near the horizon was thick enough to suppress most of the color from breaking through. I zoomed in a bit to 40mm to better isolate the soft glow as it reached its peak, which you see here. The contrast of the dark clouds above with white light shining through combined with the bit of color still made quite a beautiful scene, even though it wasn't the brilliant sunrise I thought might be possible. It was a reminder to always make the most of every situation, even when things don't turn out exactly as you had hoped. Awaken. You've been asleep for too long. And I'm not talking about sleeping physically. Far too many people are asleep at the wheel mentally, allowing other people to control the direction of their lives. Don't let that be you. It's up to you to seize control, to stand up and put yourself out there. In doing so, you may feel alone. You may feel isolated, because you are the one who will stand out. But you're not alone--there are tons of other people in your exact situation, and they are your support group who can help you achieve great things. The road ahead. Here's a different type of scene for you than what I've been posting lately. Our trip to Martha's Vineyard was definitely the most adventurous of the year in terms of sunrise photography, with all the incredible landscapes and natural beauty to be experienced there. But this is not a post about the past. Even though I have thousands of sunrise photos to share with you, and many more to create, the message will always be about moving forward. Yesterday was a day of rest for me. For the first time in over a year, i allowed myself to sleep in until 7:30am, which coincidentally still allowed me to watch the tail end of the sunrise. This morning I woke up at 5:30 and began working on my new daily routine. I'm trying to build a community of people who are living on their own terms and doing extraordinary things. Epilogue. As I look back on the year and all of my photos, it brings back a lot of memories, and I can honestly say I can vividly remember the details of every single photo shoot. There were so many times that I almost quit, but a big part of what kept me going was everyone who was following me and keeping me motivated. I knew people were counting on me to keep going. It started out being a project about just me, but soon it became more and more about all of you. I want to thank each and every one of you for following me along on this journey, especially those who have been with me since the early days and those who frequently like and comment on my photos. I didn't tell anyone, not even my parents or my friends, about what I was doing until I was almost 4 months into this project. Yet, I had been building a following all along which consisted of all people I didn't even know, who took a genuine interest in what I was doing. You guys became like a part of my family through all this, and I've even met many of you in person, which is amazing to me. I deeply appreciate all the support everyone has shown me throughout the year, and although I have fallen behind to responding to comments for the past week or so, I read every one of them and will be responding in the next few days now that I will have more time. I have many plans for 2016, including a ton of writing, an expanded website, a manifesto, videos, and possibly a book, calendars, and much more, plus I will be sharing lots of info with people on my email list and subscribers to my blog. And of course, lots of photos. I also have other projects that I'll be working on that I will invite people to follow along. Finale. The final sunrise of the year. Often we embark on a journey only to end up right where we started. We set out to find something about the world or about ourselves and discover that the answer was a lot closer than we thought all along. And so it was only fitting for me to be right here for the final sunrise of the year--the place where it all started for me on January 1st, my favorite spot to watch the sunrise in Hoboken. There really is nothing quite like this scene anywhere else in town. I took a lot of photos of the clouds this morning while I waited to see what would happen. A few of the photos made me happy enough to think they could have been the one. Soon, the glow near the horizon started to get brighter. The sun was trying to peek through. It had been so quiet and tranquil out there, but all of a sudden I heard this rushing noise, like waves crashing at the beach. I don't know where the noise came from, because the water was calm and there were only a few small boats. It felt like a signal that something was about to happen. Just then, the sun broke through a small opening in the clouds and flooded the scene with light. I felt the heat on my face. I quickly fired only 3 shots before it faded away. The noise was gone. The sun was gone. It was over. But this is not the end, for me or for this project. As the year progressed, I realized so many ways that I could inspire people and bring value to the world, and I will continue to spread my message through my sunrise photography and other means to covey everything I've learned from this amazing experience. CaptureTheSunrise is ironically not about the sunrise, or about photography. It's about finding yourself, changing your life, and doing extraordinary things. I would encourage you to find your own sunrise, whatever that may be.
