Today is a big milestone as it is day 90 of this project. The past 90 days have been incredible, and I’m feeling a great sense of accomplishment that I actually have been rising before dawn and photographing the sunrise every morning. I look through the photos I’ve taken so far, and I can distinctly remember every single morning. I remember taking each shot, I remember my thought process and what I was feeling at the time.

It was the coldest morning of spring so far, but it was nice to see the sun again after several days of cloudy skies.
There were some clouds, however, so I thought there might be a chance for an evasive bright red sky. Depending on factors I don’t yet quite understand, the rising sun could sometimes cause the clouds overhead to turn brilliant shades of red, orange, or pink, while other times the light just causes the clouds to go from gray to white. Based on the type of sky I see developing on a given morning, I try to adjust my plans accordingly to make the most of what is happening at the time.
My Jawbone wristband gently woke me out of a light sleep around 5:50am. Knowing that I had plenty of time to venture a good distance before sunrise, I thought about taking an Uber down to Jersey City to catch some photos similar to the one I took last weekend. But, when I looked into it, the fares were greatly inflated during that time slot, and it would have cost me over $20 to get down to the location I had in mind. So I decided to save that for another day. Instead, I walked down to Pier A—the furthest location in town from my apartment. In hindsight, I’m glad I made that choice, because today ended up being a “gray to white” kind of morning.
I took several shots of the sun rising behind this gazebo, but then I got the idea to get the sun rays shining right through the middle of it. None of the previous shots compared to this one. From this angle, it almost resembles something from Japan rather than Hoboken, New Jersey.
Sometimes it can be beneficial to look at things from a slightly different perspective.

Going out in the rain can be an invigorating way to start the day.
It allows me to see things I normally wouldn’t see, like the reflection on this basketball court surface which makes it look like a sheet of glass.
I also made a black and white version of this image, but I prefer the subtle tones of original color version here.
