The weather was brutal this morning, with 50 mph winds and a wind chill of -14 degrees. Needless to say, I opted to stay inside for the sunrise. Still wanting to present the sunrise in an interesting way, I decided to go with a timelapse video.

There was a big fire over in Brooklyn, and amazingly we were able to see the smoke from all the way over here. There weren’t any clouds in the sky, so the sunrise colors were somewhat muted (though no less extraordinary, as I am always amazed by the beauty of nature) but today it was the rising smoke that stole the show.

My post is coming late today because it took me some time to fool around with the software to create this timelapse video. I’ve only tried a few timelapse videos before, so it is something I am just learning. One of the benefits of this project has been that it has forced me to learn things at a rapid pace. I look forward to continuing this learning on a daily basis.

Well it’s day 30 of my little photography/lifestyle experiment, and I’m happy to say it’s still going strong. I woke up earlier today than any morning so far, and have felt more refreshed and well-rested than ever. I’ve learned a lot in the past 30 days, including the importance of preparation. Getting myself into a good morning routine and preparing everything the night before has been crucial to me getting out the door in time to capture sunrise photos.

So you can imagine how excited I was for this morning’s sunrise since I had my equipment all ready, had my location all picked out, and woke up feeling so refreshed. The temperature was in the mid 30s which meant it would was going to be one of the warmest mornings of January so far, and I was excited to get outside and not freeze like I have done so many other mornings including yesterday.

I got up and looked out the window and saw it was complete overcast with a snow dusting on the ground and some light flurries still falling. But I still went out anyway for a few photos.

Not much of a sunrise this morning, but it was a reminder to always make the most of what life throws your way.

So many interesting things happened this morning that I was having difficulty deciding which photo I would use for today. Vapor trails from commercial jets crisscrossed above the skyline. A family of ducks swam past in a V formation. Seagulls were migrating upriver in unusually large flocks, creating a spectacle of their own in the sky.

And then this happened. The sun began to emerge with a white hot brilliance. It was as if the sun was burning a hole through this building. This was not a camera effect, as it was visible to the naked eye. I don’t know what caused the sunlight to shine through. My best guess is probably windows positioned directly in line with the sun. A seagull passed by at just the right moment. And I knew immediately that I had my shot for the day.

A swirling, bright pink cloud formation appeared at the horizon this morning, resembling flames shooting up from some massive fire. When I first spotted it, I wasn’t in a good location for a photo, so I ran down closer to the water hoping to capture it in time. I managed to do so while it was still radiating with a fiery brilliance. It lasted only about a minute or two before it started to fade away, and then it was gone.

After what was supposed to be “snowmageddon” turned out to be a huge letdown this morning, I was slightly embarrassed to be outside taking pictures. I should have worn a sign explaining, “No really, I’m not amazed by the snow, I just take photos of the sunrise every morning.” That way people might not have looked at me so funny when they saw me with my camera and tripod.

Since the snow itself was pretty uneventful, I decided to take a photo this morning that would be a little different (and hopefully more interesting) than most of the other Juno snowstorm photos you will see today. Sometimes when things don’t work out the way you expected, you have to shift your perspective in order to make the most of them.
